Kentucky State Nature Preserves to host hike at Brigadoon State Nature Preserve

FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 7, 2008) - You’re invited to join local environmental educators and Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission volunteers Dr. Karen Powell and Julie Gee for a guided nature hike at Brigadoon State Nature Preserves in Barren County at 10 a.m. CDT on Saturday, April 12.  The hike will focus on the natural history, geology and spring wildflowers of Brigadoon.

Participants should come prepared for a two to three hour hike over a one-mile, moderately strenuous trail through ridge and valley terrain.  Participants are encouraged to bring water to carry with them, as well as wear shoes or hiking boots.

Attendance is limited to 20 participants with a five-participant minimum.  To sign up, contact KSNPC Western Region Preserves Manager Lane Linnenkohl at 270-745-7005 or by e-mail at lane.linnenkohl@ky.gov. There is no charge.

Directions: In Barren County, from Exit 43 on I-65, travel east on the Cumberland Parkway to its junction with US 31E in Glasgow. Follow US 31E south for six and one-half miles. Turn left onto Dover Church-Browning School Road and travel approximately one and one-half miles. Turn left onto Mutter Road. The parking area is approximately one-half mile on the left.

The hike is among activities surrounding Kentucky’s celebration of Earth Day, scheduled for Tuesday, April 22. Spearheaded by the Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet, a number of state agencies, local governments, businesses and organizations have joined together to celebrate Earth Day in the commonwealth.  Some partners have organized environmental activities throughout the month of April, while others are providing information and resources on protecting Kentucky’s environment.  Visit the state Earth Day Web site at www.earthday.ky.gov to learn more about Kentucky's Earth Day celebration.
