OWENSBORO, Ky. (July 18, 2006) – A Boone County landowner with a demonstrated passion for environmental education and conservation today received an Outstanding Forest Steward Award from the Kentucky Division of Forestry.

The award was presented in Owensboro at the annual convention of the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts.

Barry Hartman and his wife, Brenda, own 131 acres in Boone County. They have had a forest stewardship plan since 1985 and have lent their land for environmental education for many years. Approximately 1,500 students and adults have toured their farm, and they have conducted at least one field day for school and church groups each year.

Since working with the division on creation of a forest stewardship plan, the Hartmans have conducted one timber harvest, implemented timber stand improvement on 70 acres and installed 5,000 feet of recreational trails. They have also planted and maintained a Christmas tree plantation.

Other accomplishments and awards:

• Accepted into the American Tree Farm System in 1986.
• State runner-up for National Association of Conservation Districts Environmental Educator of the Year, 1986.
• Recognized as a Kentucky Forest Steward in 1994.
• Chosen as the 1998 Goodyear Outstanding Cooperator of the Year.

The Hartmans set an example for other forestland owners to follow.
