Environmental Education

The Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) is part of Kentucky's growing environmental education effort.  This page describes the cabinet's diverse environmental education programs.  


 

Current Education Highlights

  • The Kentucky Environmental Education Council administers a certification program for environmental educators.  The program begins in the spring and takes about a year to complete.  Registration begins in the fall.
  • Learn about Kentucky's new Green and Healthy Schools program.     

 

Cabinet Environmental Education Programs

  • Earth Day Kentucky Every year EEC spearheads a statewide Earth Day campaign to encourage people to celebrate and protect their environment. 

  • Project Learning Tree Curriculum Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an award-winning environmental education program designed for teachers and other educators working with students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12.

  • Firewise Communities Program  The Kentucky Firewise Communities Program provides information on how you can protect your home and community before a wildfire strikes.

  • Envirothon Environmental Competition  Envirothon is a competitive, problem-solving, natural resources experience for students in grades 9 through 12. 

  • Conservation Art and Writing Contest An educational contest for students through grade 12.

  • Water Watch Volunteers protecting Kentucky waterways.  This program is dedicated to helping you protect the streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands near and dear to your heart.

  • Watershed Watch More than 3,000 individuals in the state of Kentucky who are giving their time in an effort to improve Kentucky's waterways through a coordinated campaign of water quality monitoring, skills development and advocacy.

  • Clean Air for Kentucky This program features a hot air balloon and a free air quality resource guide containing educational materials for teachers, camp leaders and other educators.
     
  • Mining Education The Department for Natural Resources provides information to students, teachers, employees of the coal industry and the general public to expand their knowledge of coal and the coal industry. 

  • Waste and Recycling Education A variety of resources available to help educate everyone from schoolchildren to landfill operators on environmental issues.  

  • Commonwealth Cleanup Week Art Contest The 1998 Kentucky General Assembly designated the fourth week in March as Commonwealth Cleanup Week.  The Kentucky Division of Waste Management sponsors a contest and asks students to create art that reflects the natural beauty of our state.

  • Eastern Kentucky PRIDE PRIDE unites volunteers with the resources of federal, state and local governments in order to clean the region’s waterways, end illegal trash dumps and promote environmental awareness and education while renewing pride in the region.
